Saturday Helper.... Aug. 2020
I am so excited about my Lazy Susans!! I feel like it was a super cool idea that I created all by my big-girl self! So after playing and learning and re-doing almost every aspect of the process, I felt like I was ready to launch my new creations. I posted in Facebook, Instagram, and on my FASO website. I created several videos reviewing my progression and the beautiful results. Several of my friends contacted me and said they would like to order one. I was a bit nervous about the price, because I am charging $300 for a 16" and $350 for a 24". Now for a painting that size, that would be a bargain... about half of what I normally charge. But since this is more of a 'craft' item, I wasn't sure about the response. And to be honest, I am really not making much for my time. But I figure I'm still learning and SURELY I will get better and more efficient. Well, it seems like I always have to do things the hard way....
The wooden rounds were on back order, so I had to order them online (at about 1.5 times the cost). And I didn't realize a couple of technical things that required more labor than I anticipated, even though I had already made 3 prototypes. I have now calculated it takes about 14 hours per lazy susan. So my hard costs are about $100 per and with 14 hours of my labor per.... I am almost making minimum wage :-). But I am having fun and learning. And selling. So there's that. I am definitely not complaining.
Did I mention that I have a tough critic who holds me to task? I felt like I was done with these but my husband said that they should be perfect. Well, I like things "done well" I think perfection is over-rated. He likes perfect (obviously, since I'm the person he chose to spend the rest of his life with). So.... I embarked on perfection which basically means I had to re-sand all of the minute, almost imperceptible imperfections... and re-resin. Again!! Arrrggghhhhh. Resining is a challenge. All conditions have to be perfect and even then you run the risk of messing up. So re-resining every one of these was frustrating. But, like anything - it's always easier the second time. So it's a rainy Saturday and that's what WE are doing. (Yes, I convinced him to help).
I think these will be done by the end of the week and I can't wait to deliver them. I KNOW my friends will love them. I love them!
I have a few samples posted on my website... check them out and let me know what you think.
